SUSTAINABLE FORESTS, UPSCALE INCOME,   ECO-TOURISM EXPERIENCE – THE OGUN WAY

News24 International🇳🇬

The air in Ogun forest reserves smells different today. It smells like renewal.

Under the leadership of the Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, Ogun State is in the middle of a quiet but powerful transformation. One that protects trees today and pays dividends tomorrow.

From Protection to Prosperity

Years ago, the conversation around forestry was mostly about stopping deforestation. Today, it’s about building back a better ecosystem.

Through the vision of Hon. Engr. Taiwo Oludotun transforming forestry, protecting our heritage, and building a sustainable future for Ogun State the Ministry has moved from forest protection and restoration to large-scale sustainable plantation development. Fast-growing indigenous species are being planted alongside timber with global market value, creating carbon sinks while securing livelihoods for host communities.

Conservation in His Own Words

Speaking recently during the International Day of Forests, the Commissioner emphasized that forests must be valued beyond timber.

“Forests play an essential role in sustaining inclusive and resilient economies. They generate employment, support rural and urban livelihoods, underpin food systems, and provide ecosystem services that enable productivity across sectors,”_ Oludotun said.

“Yet, despite their wide-ranging economic, social and environmental contributions, forests remain systematically undervalued in economic planning,”he added.

He also noted that beyond timber, “forests regulate water supply, protect soils, store carbon, and reduce disaster risks, forming the natural foundation for agriculture, energy systems, and industrial activities”_

The Commissioner further revealed that in the last 3 years, the state has planted over 3 million trees to tackle deforestation, and has revamped all nine forest reserves in the state.

At a recent budget defence, he assured lawmakers of “sustained efforts toward the restoration, protection and sustainable management of forest resources across the State”

Today's Reality

Raising Standards to World Class

The shift is deliberate. Ogun State is aligning its forestry practices with international standards, from sustainable forest management certification to traceability systems for timber.

At a recent data-driven forest management training, Oludotun stressed _“the importance of adopting data-driven approaches to forest governance and biodiversity conservation”_, noting that reliable data is necessary to respond to challenges like illegal logging and climate change.

Rangers are now equipped with digital monitoring tools. Plantation operations follow best practices for soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Communities are trained in agroforestry and non-timber forest products.

The goal is simple: wood and forest products from Ogun should compete anywhere in the world, and meet the standards buyers in Europe, Asia, and the Americas demand.

Revenue That Lasts

That standards upgrade is already changing the numbers.

With improved management, better plantation yields, and value-added processing, Ogun’s forestry sector is generating improved internally and internationally generated revenue. The Ministry recorded over 85% revenue performance in 2025, including leasing 3,000 hectares of forest land at Oja Odan to investors.

Exports of certified timber, bamboo products, and eco-tourism experiences are opening new foreign exchange streams for the state. Every naira earned is reinvested into restoration, fire control, and community forestry programs — so the forest keeps growing as the income grows.

Leadership That Turns Vision Into Action

This is what leadership looks like when vision meets action. Challenges like illegal logging, climate pressure, and funding gaps are being turned into opportunities for innovation, partnership, and jobs with a comprehensive roadmap of His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun Governor Ogun State in making Ogun a destination for tourism.

Hon. Engr. Taiwo Oludotun vision :

🌳 To protect what remains

🌱 To restore what was lost

💯 To manage what we grow to world standard

🌳 To build a green economy that funds itself

Ogun State is proving that you don’t have to choose between the environment and the economy. With the right standards, the right leadership, and the right commitment, the forest can do both — protect our heritage today, and power our future tomorrow.

Hon. Engr. Taiwo Oludotun: Transforming forestry, protecting our heritage, and building a sustainable future for Ogun State.
